~ANIAN~
Fine art installations and sculptures by Sam Holland
Anian is a celebration of Native British and Irish mythology through sculpture.
Inspired by the ancient tale of Hanes Taliesin the first in this body of work is Cerridwen – Mam Yr Awen. Cerridwen – Mother of Inspiration.

Transformation, fate and relentless pursuit
Cerridwen – Mam Yr Awen
This installation marks a moment of liminality within Cerridwen - Life and Death, Murderer and Mother. It catches her body in the ecstasy of transforming back from Hen to Sorcerer - completing one circle and beginning another.
Cerridwen stands upon her cauldron of inspiration at the moment of transformation. Her frenetic pursuit of Gwion Bach is over.
She has moved bodies from Sorcerer to greyhound, from greyhound to otter, from otter to hawk and from hawk to hen. Cerridwen has consumed the seed that was Gwion and that seed has found its way to her womb and begun another journey, a new story – The story of Taliesin.
Cerridwen – Mam Yr Awen, mother and muse of the Welsh bardic tradition. Her influence within native mythology, folk and academic culture is ancient and profound. Revered and reviled equally throughout the long history of the Welsh Bardic tradition, Cerridwen has been a constant within the Cerrd Dafod from the Cynfeirdd to modern day.
Poetry is an integral part of this piece. The magic of the spoken word comes from deep within the cauldron as Kristoffer Hughes (author, druid and performer) recites Hanes Taliesin tie the knot between muse and Bard.
And yet, Cerridwen remains physically absent from the land and culture she helped create.
Cerridwen has inspired me to rectify this lack of presence and install this piece as a permanent memorial to her on the shores of Llyn Tegid.
